For a place called The Empanada’s, their empanadas must be stellar! They’ve boldly thrown down the gauntlet with that name – and Oh My God do they deliver! These empanadas are made with excellent dough, they have just the right amount of flakiness, perfect amount of crunch, and great texture. Every single empanada I’ve had here meets this high standard. They use high quality ingredients and the flavor profiles speak for themselves. Even though I’m not vegan, I always order the vegan empanadas. This time I ordered two ham and cheese vegan empanadas, but their vegan options also include tofu capri and seitan beef (both delicious!!). For vegetarians (I’ve been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 35+yrs), I’d also highly recommend the spinach, the caprese, and the onion and cheese options. They also have beef, chicken, and salmon options for meat eaters. And they have SWEET EMPANADAS too. Oh my God!! So epic!!

I’d also like to give The Empanada’s kudos on their marketing approach. It’s very true that we eat with the eyes, first. I love their branding, from the outside signage to the paper they set their empanadas on. I love that they bring the empanadas on a cute basket, as well. Attention to detail is very important, especially in the highly-competitive restaurant market.

Location is also key. And to be frank, downtown Miami can be very much hit or miss, but every single time I’ve visited The Empanada’s I get a cozy, homey vibe. They don’t lock their bathrooms or employ keypads, either. Fear is not here – only great vibes. Even though there’s a huge college campus across the street and a Metromover every a couple of minutes above, once you walk through their doors, you’re in a chill, stress-free zone. When you add great food and wonderful customer service to the mix, you have FIVE STARS all day, everyday!

I can’t wait to stop by The Empanada’s again. You most definitely should give them a try!!

Whenever I go to South Florida, I usually frequent Hollywood. After filming for about an hour, I decided to make a stop at one of my favorite spots, Octopus Garden Bar. Sadly, my favorite bartender wasn’t there and the patron next to me was a chain smoker. Octopus Garden is a standalone bar so smoking is allowed. I love the mellow lights, the pirate themes, and the music selection. Unfortunately, as an ex-smoker (quit back in August 2005), the smell of cigarette smoke is highly annoying to me. So after downing my Blue Moon, I decided I’d get out of there. I figured I’d down a couple of slices of pizza at MAURO’S (my favorite pizzeria in FL) and then visit Elixir Kava Bar, which is just a couple of blocks away.

Much to my chagrin, Mauro’s apparently closes at 10pm on Sundays. I had always banked on the fact that Mauro’s stayed open for all the closing bars so drunk patrons could scarf done delicious slices and garlic knots while waiting for the rideshares. So much for that. But even if that were the case, it was particularly cold this night and staying open meant losing money.

Mind you, when I landed the night prior, good ole Siri told me the temperature was just north of 30 degrees. It felt just as cold on Sunday night in downtown Hollywood. Plus, the place seemed like a virtual ghost town. Even though I made it into Mauro’s at 9:54pm, I was told they couldn’t make me a couple of slices. They probably started cleaning early and wanted to get home. No big deal.

Even though I was 0-2 by this point, I kept hope alive for visiting the Elixir Kava Bar. Just to be sure, I checked their hours. I could’ve gone to Twin Peaks, but it’s never been my cup of tea. Oddly enough, I’d go there after Elixir and absolutely loved it. My waitress, April, was so awesome I returned Monday night, too, but that’s for a separate article. Let’s talk about my visit to Elixir Kava Bar | Hollywood.

First and foremost, I love the location and the exterior signage. Upon entering, I fell in love with the decorating theme. They have some comfy couches, relaxing chairs, nice dim lighting and a really cool bar. I saw an empty stool and asked a redhead seated at right if the stool was taken. She said it wasn’t. There was a laptop section corresponding to the stool to the left of the open stool. It’s screen was active so I wanted to be sure I wasn’t taking anyone’s seat. Once I sat down, I made eye contact with the bartender. He looked to be in his late 20’s, maybe early 30’s. He seemed somewhat busy, attending to people who’d come up to the bar to order, then talked to the redhead (seemingly about job interview tips), and also helped people lined up by the front of the bar. I set my GoPro down and read news on my iPhone. The last thing I wanted to seem like was a travel vlogger.

After about five minutes, a long-haired guy approached the bar and talked to the long-haired bartender about how much his words of encouragement meant to him. They had a cool moment and I tried not to say anything. This was about ten minutes in. The crowd had died down and the long-haired bartender then focused on the redhead. By this point, I had made eye contact with bartender about at least a half dozen times. Ultimately I was just staring at him, not in a hard way, but in an obvious way. He just kept talking to the redhead, refilled her drink, and never looked at me. He never greeted me either (like the others) when I came in, never said something like “I’ll be with you in a minute” or “go stand over there to order.” It’s as if I didn’t exist.

What’s interesting is that I’m 6’4 and change and weigh 340lbs. I’m also bald and cleanshaven, so I really stand out. Although I’ve been told numerous times that I look like a police officer, I’m actually a full-time, licensed, practicing attorney. I don’t have long hair, I don’t dress trendy, but my money is green just like the next person’s.

After about fifteen minutes in, I got up when the bartender left and asked the redhead how one went about ordering. She was very dismissive, saying “no one’s against you” and “i don’t want to argue” when I made the point I felt ignored. When I politely told her I wasn’t arguing just inquiring about how to get service, she waved me off with her hand like one would an annoying child.

At that point, I left.

I wanted to feel like a total zero, but the attorney in me wouldn’t allow it. I’m not a narcissist, but I certainly don’t have any self-esteem issues. It was clear from the moment I walked into Elixir Kava Bar that I didn’t belong. They didn’t want me there and ignored me until I left. This isn’t my first rodeo. I have a travel blog and have visited many U.S. states and foreign countries. Part of what I do with this website is shine the light on places like this. There’s no doubt in my mind this is the kind of trendy/hipster place where there’s very much an in-crowd. It’s the sort of junior high school cliquishness that many of us hope we left long behind during adolescence. This kind of treatment goes beyond mere bad customer service. And ironically, the bartender promoting this mindset was also fostering it because he was advising a prospective employee on how to have a successful job interview. Who knows, maybe he’ll train her in the ways of being hipster snob. She seemed to bring her own talents in the regard to the table.

I really wanted Elixir Kava Bar to be the Hollywood, FL version of Dazed! Dazed! is an amazing THC bar located within Planet 13 in Las Vegas. I visited Dazed! everyday during my recent trip to Vegas in November 2025. Granted, Elixir is a kava bar, but when I walked in, their layout made me nostalgic. Sadly, I was TOTALLY MISTAKEN. As I said on a video I made after leaving, I give Elixir Kava Bar ONE (1) STAR. Even though I’m almost positive the longhaired bartender is an employee (as opposed to an owner), it’s no coincidence that I stuck out of the busy clientele like a sore thumb. If you’re longhaired, tatted-up, pierced up, or have a really stylish clothing style, I’m sure they’ll trip over themselves to serve you. If you look me, don’t expect to be greeted, much less served.

I’ll never give this place a second look.

After I finished my bagel, I wanted to use the restroom. Once I concluded my business, I was shocked to find that the bathroom had no toilet paper. The dispenser was broken, but they didn’t have a roll in there, anywhere. They also didn’t have any paper towels in the dispenser. Further to that, they also didn’t have any hand soap – it was bone dry. The bathroom also looked as if it hadn’t been cleaned in a good while. It was actually pretty gross.

When I ascertained who the manager was, I asked him why the bathroom was in such disregard and why there was no toilet paper, paper towels, or hand soap. He said I should have asked him for those things. I couldn’t believe it. Should those things be there automatically? At that point, the manager rolled his eyes and ignored me. He then proceeded to speak poorly of me in Spanish with the customer to the side. The same customer then lashed out at me and tried to hit me with his car afterwards. They were shocked that I was fluent in Spanish. When I said I would contact corporate, the manager didn’t care one bit.

Interestingly, his staff were very professional and very nice. Why is this person managing this Einstein Bros. Bagels? Sunny Isles Beach is lined up and down with ultra luxurious high rises, it caters to a large tourist population, and the shop is located on an and upcoming plaza. When I pay close to $10 for a cup of coffee and a bagel, I don’t expect to use a fork as a stirrer, use a dirty bathroom with no paper towels, no toilet paper, no hand soap, and on top of that be treated unprofessionally by a manager.

I give Einstein Bros. Bagels one (1) star as I stated on the video. It shouldn’t matter that I have a travel channel and/or that I review restaurants, hotels, bars, and airlines. It’s just a little ironic that this rude, unprofessional manager did it to me. Einstein Bros. Bagels has been in business since the mid 90’s. I remember when they hit the stage and I love their bagels. I always buy them when traveling, as you can find them at many large airports. I won’t hold this experience against them, but they really need to look at this store.

I did notice a homeless couple in the lobby and perhaps there’s homeless population in the area. I don’t know. If that were an issue, the location could use the number pad on the door to control bathroom access; however, that does not give management the green light to leave restrooms looking the way the Einstein Bros. Bagels Sunny Isles Beach location does. That’s bad customer service. It’s a 1 Star location that should be a 5 Star location.

As I left the location, I walked off the sidewalk to talk to some motorists who waved at my camera. As I prepared to walk back onto the sidewalk, Sunny Isles Kenneth blasted his horn at me. I hadn’t seen him since he left the shop so I had no idea he was in the Mercedes Benz SUV. In fact, when he honked the horn, I had no idea it was him. It was only when he tried to hit me with his car did I notice. Mind you, the GoPro doesn’t zoom in. You can see from the photo that he literally put his car beside my person. This is why I made sure to get his license plate.

As a full-time, licensed, practicing attorney, I could have called the police and pressed charges. A moving, motor vehicle should never be used to intimidate a pedestrian. If you look into the window, you can clearly see his shirt. But what’s more alarming is that you can see him holding the coffee cup with his right hand. That means that when he carried out his reckless stunt, he only had one hand on the wheel. Per an AI search, between 85-90% of the global population are right-handed. If Kenneth was right-handed, then not only did he only have one hand on the wheel, but he had his passive on it, meaning he had even less control of the moving motor vehicle. One wrong step or one slip of the wheel and he could have struck me. That’s not only reckless, but it’s absolutely egregious. He’s very lucky I didn’t press charges and have little interest to file suit against him. He wouldn’t do well in either court. But if you he ever sees it, don’t make my word for it. Ask a few attorneys.

With regard to Einstein Bros. Bagels, please do better.

Ace Frehley sloppy Jimmy Page inspired sound gave KISS the edge they so badly needed. Many critics had trouble seeing beyond the makeup and the costumes, but Frehley’s solos broke through the doubt and hate. He was extremely musical despite not being a schooled musician. In some later interviews, guitar virtuosos like Aerosmith’s Joe Perry whined that Frehley “didn’t even know all his scales,” but that mattered little to the Bronx native who had run with gangs during his adolescence. Ace was from the streets. He admittedly was not a techy guitar player. And perhaps he couldn’t read music, but so what? His playing defined an era and inspired countless generations. And his time with KISS was classic. That is up until 1980.

Several things happened within KISS from 1979-82 that caused Ace to leave the band for the first time. In 1979, the band released Dynasty. This disco-inspired record was one of two of that genre. The other being Unmasked. Dynasty was the first record where one of the founding members was barely heard from. Peter Criss played on only one track, Dirty Living. Aside from that one track, Anton Fig played uncredited. The same thing happened for the follow-up to Dynasty, Unmasked in 1980. By this point, Gene and Paul managed to convince Ace and longtime manager Bill Aucoin to move for Peter Criss’ firing. Once Peter was out, Ace felt as if he had no voice in the band. In 1981, the band released Music From The Elder. This was a concept record that totally ruined whatever mystery and coolness was left with the KISS name. They band had long lost its hard rock roots. If two consecutive disco records didn’t ruin it, then The Elder sealed the deal. Without having Peter in the band, Ace could only protest symbolically. He was outvoted on everything. Soon after firing Criss, the band got rid of Aucoin. By 1982, Ace was miserable and when he was involved in a bad car accident, he was ready to go.

By the time KISS went into the studio to record Creatures Of The Night, Ace had decided to quit. Although Frehley participated on a promotional tour in Europe to support the record, his decision had been made. The band would then work with Vinnie Vincent, who would barely last two years before quitting the band, as well. The creative control of Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley was overwhelming. Vincent’s successor Mark St. John was out fast as well to be replaced by Bruce Kulick.

Ace Frehley embarked on a solo career after leaving KISS. Frehley’s solo in 1978 was the most successful of the four and had a Top 40 track with a remake of the single “New York Groove.” The song continues to be played in sports events and commercials to this day. When Ace decided to try his hand at a follow-up project to KISS, he created Frehley’s Comet. The band inked with Megaforce/Atlantic, released a debut that nearly reached RIAA gold status, and had several videos on heavy rotation on MTV. The band toured the world and recorded a follow-up LP. After Frehley’s Comet, Ace went full-solo with 1989’s Trouble Walkin, another commercial hit. As of the mid 1990’s, Frehley reunited with Gene, Paul, and Peter to do a KISS Reunion. After well over 100 concerts from 1996-97, Ace joined KISS to record a new record, Psycho Circus, another commercial success.

Psycho Circus was another smoke and mirror situation. Both Ace and Peter got duped. They lent their name and likeness to a project that wasn’t truly a band effort. It was Gene and Paul exerting full control just like in the 70’s but worst! Because in the 90’s Gene and Paul owned the KISS name and they owned both Ace and Peter’s makeup. Ace was allowed to pen one song and Peter was allowed to sing one track. The reason for this, per Stanley and Simmons, was that Frehley’s and Criss’s contributions “weren’t good enough.” By 2002, Frehley left KISS after their so-called “Farewell Tour.” In reality, KISS didn’t actually say farewell until some 22 years later. From there Ace signed with E1 Music and released several chart-topping solo albums. He was later inducted into the Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame as a member of KISS. Although he would have loved to perform in full make-up with his KISS brothers, Gene and Paul opposed this, so Ace still played, but with other people.

The world of rock ‘n roll lost a tremendous star in Paul “Ace” Frehley on October 16th, 2025. RIP Spaceman.

While the statue itself has a beautiful three level observatory that only costs $1 to enter, there’s much more to see on this stop along your tour. Oh and that’s right, don’t forget that Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar so you won’t have to convert currency when visiting this Latin American destination. The paper money is the exact same as The States. The coinage, however, is unique to Ecuador. You won’t be able to use half dollars, quarters, or smaller change in the U.S. or other countries that use the dollar (e.g. El Salvador).

Tour buses offer a great way to see sights like El Panecillo. I will warn you that Wifi signal and phone reception can be quite iffy at this particular spot. There are plenty of “amarillos,” or yellow cabs. I took a few cabs in Ecuador, but I always asked for a price to where I was going beforehand. Otherwise, you’re at the mercy of the driver and his/her meter.

When I went to El Panecillo, I struck a deal with my Uber driver. The app charged me $5.60 from the Hampton Inn La Carolina (where I stayed) to El Panecillo. We agreed he’d wait for me for an hour while I filmed and explored and he’d bring me back to the Casa Museo Guayasamín for $10. That was a deal and it was the number I was thinking before asking him. I basically paid him $4 for him to wait for me, but it wasn’t a dreadful wait, either. He walked around and explored as well. Being at El Panecillo is a hoot for anyone that visits.

One more note when it comes to traveling. The Quito Metro is a fantastic option to get around the city; however, it doesn’t reach places like El Panecillo. Local transit seems to be less of a factor in this Latin American capital than others. And when it comes to local transit and even the Metro, you will have to sacrifice time. While both options will get you to most places, they won’t necessarily get you there as fast as the amarillos or rideshare options. My guess is the Metro has taken riders from them. Also Uber and InDrive have had an undeniable impact as well. InDrive is a popular rideshare alternative to Uber; however, I would strongly recommend Uber for added security for riders.

There are a number of cool shops where you can pick up souvenirs and artisanal gifts. Many of the shopkeepers, as you’ll see on my video, have been here for over three decades. These aren’t goods purchased from wholesalers. These are handmade products and keep true to indigenous tradition. When you purchase goods at these shops, you’re keeping this vital market alive. El Panecillo has about half a dozen of these shops (called “locales”). There also several locales that serve home cooking and a formal restaurant with breathtaking views as well.

If you plan on visiting Quito – or you’re already here – be sure to include a trip to El Panecillo. Go there with an appetite for knowledge, good food, and great times. Be sure to snap pictures and videos – make memories! And plan ahead. Getting there is one thing, but getting back is equally important. Don’t think so? Well, what about spitting? Two bodies don’t touch when spitting is involved, but that is also a harmful or offensive touching for either criminal or civil battery. But in the Choquet’s exmaple, it goes beyond a harmful or offensive damage. In this case, there is also the high likelihood of property damage. Had Human_Wildlife_Project sough a PPA (or Private Person’s Arrest) in this case, the employee/owner that sprayed him with an entire bottle of water while standing on a public sidewalk could have been held liable for any damages to HWP’s equipment. Moreover, a judge could have ordered the payment of punitive damages as what the employee/owner of the establishment did amounted to egregious conduct. The employee/owner stated a desire to physically assault the YouTuber after the battery. Given his prior behavior, body language, and the close proximity he put himself in with the YouTuber and that of the female employee/owner that invaded the YouTuber’s personal space, it would have made a reasonable person fear another imminent battery. That’s both criminal and civil assault.

In addition the male employee making numerous threats, acting in a threatening manner, and attacking the YouTuber with water, the female employee/owner’s violating the YouTuber’s face and putting her hands over his camera lense(s), also amounts to an offensive touching. Her actions may have also put a reasonable person in an imminent fear of a battery, which amounts to assault. I have a real problem with businesses that use public sidewalks to set chairs and tables. The chairs, tables, and decks are private. The public sidewalk belongs to the public. This is something shopkeepers, restaurateurs, and the poorly-trained San Francisco police officers who arrived on scene need to understand.

According to OpenPayrolls.com, San Francisco Police Officer Steven J Orengo listed as “Police Officer 2,” earns an annual salary (per 2023) of  $144,446.25. This police officer, the more vocal of the two, tried to run the YouTuber off. When the employee/owner of the establishment told this officer that he or someone would physically assault the YouTuber, all this officer could say was, “let’s not let it go there.” Officer Orengo seemed incedibly passive towards the restaurant staff and patrons. A peace officer should strive to maintain peace, not win popularity contests. A police officer is in the business of law enforcement, not sparing people’s feelings or catering to mob hysteria.

The other officer, who perhaps tried to cover her name with per pocket cover, was Officer Yuka Nagamine. Neither Orengo or Nagamine educated Choquet’s staff as to the fact that HWP was fully within the law. These officers were more concerned with being well-received by the restaurant staff and customers. Although they left without infringing on the YouTuber’s constitutional rights, they left him at as much risk as he was before they arrived. The San Francisco Police Department – clearly – lacks training when it comes to dealing with public photography. According to OpenGovPay.com, Yuka Nagamine is a Police Officer 3 and earns $269,265 annually as of 2023. Both of these officers should be reprimanded. Once they left, more customers and passerby traffic were emboldened to put the YouTuber in harm’s way. These police officers should not be permitted to deal with the public until they more training. There lack of professionalism is utterly outrageous.

San Francisco should do better. This is considered one of the most progressive cities in America. Its police officers are very well-paid, seem to have excellent equipment and resources, but seemingly lack training. Not only did they not protect a citizen exercising a constitutionally-protected activity, but they left him in a more vulnerable position than he was before they arrived. Moreover, they failed to educate the public and significantly deter the crowd from any physical aggression against the YouTuber. “Let’s not let it go there,” is hardly the kind admonishing the Choquet’s thug needed to hear. When the Choquet’s thug suggested the YouTuber might be dealt with physically, these officers should have threatened arrest and formal charges. They were too busy trying to be liked by the majority, that they failed to protect the rights of an individual. That’s poor policing.

What first sparked my interest was their rhythm section. They were totally in sync with each other and whenever that happens, that stops me dead in my tracks. I love great singing, solid guitar playing, and the brass, but there’s just something about that connection between the drums and the bass that just totally does it for me. As it turns out, the bass player and drummer didn’t have too much history together, but they are without a doubt the backbone of this band.

It’s pathetic that several of the churchgoers were old enough to know better. What kind of an individual thinks they can deny law abiding citizens from conducting constitutionally-protected activity in public? Maybe these folks would be happier living in a place China or North Korea. It’s mindboggling to me that Americans are so ignorant of the rights we all have, but also so intolerant that a complete stranger taking photos or videos gives them the moral justification to approach them and try to force their will upon them. These clowns menaced this man, particularly the crazy-looking woman who ironically tried to tell passerby traffic that the free citizen was crazy. These individuals harassed a complete stranger on a public sidewalk and falsely imprisoned him, denying him the ability to leave at certain instances. They parishioners did a wonderful job exposing the parish to civil liability for their wrongdoing. It got so bad a couple of times that the man had to walk into the road. What if the man had bit struck by a motor vehicle? The church would have been, at least partially, liable.

Did any of the goons who emerged from the Rancho Bernardo Community Presbyterian Church hold any official positions? Were any of them deacons, pastors, or trustees? We don’t know. I think the police response left much to be desired. There were no arrests, no mentions of criminal activity, and ultimately the officer and the congregants asked the First Amendment Auditor to please not block ingress or egress. They tried to end it with a public safety spin after they harassed and arguably assaulted a free citizen on a public sidewalk.

Churches should be very grateful for their tax exempt status and be mindful that they do not own the sidewalks or streets where their houses of religious worship are located. Their rights do not trump those of everyday citizens.

That said, many people get very uneasy about having their license plates photographed. This is very understandable as this is very private information. This is why license plates are displayed on the outside of vehicles for all to see. Naturally, many folks in the United States get very hostile when their plates are recorded by LPG’s. License plate numbers in the United States are worth the most to Mr. Harbison. He also pays for plates from Canada; however, Canadian plates are paid at $0.10 USD per plate and the bonus is only $5 per interaction. Apparently, Mr. Harbison finds Canadians very uninteresting. Nonetheless, he pays $100 USD for every 20 video interactions with folks in that underdeveloped country. .

Many people want to work for Gru, but he is highly selective of who he hires. Several people who have worked for him have gone on to starting their own businesses, buying beautiful homes, and going from living austere existences to living off the lap of luxury. Not everyone gets to work for a guy like Gru, but if you’re lucky enough to get an interview with him, you might be able to write your own ticket.

Quite a few people have tried to seek out Gru in Cambodia, but that doesn’t seem advisable. Gru is not easily found. He’s very reclusive and a very private person. If Gru wants to work with you, he’ll get a hold of you. Just make sure to check your email daily, including your spam filter. Just email Gru, wearing only a bathrobe and snorkel, and he should be in touch.
